Blvck Karibou

1) Tell us something about yourself that your fans may not know.

A: I'm called KARIBOU after a caribou deer, but my antlers are actually based off Elk Antlers, no one has picked that up yet.

2) How did you come up with your name Blvck Karibou?

A: When I started this project I wanted to create something visually striking, and unique, it was born with the name/concept all in one. I also always like deer and wanted to incorporate a name around that somehow, hence Blvck Karibou was born.

3) When did you decide to wear antlers to go with the stage name?

A: I got a little tired of seeing all artists look the same, you could have a night with 5 awesome bass artists, but to the regular person it’s super hard to tell anyone apart, especially regular people as opposed to us music nerds. So I came up with this concept a few years ago, one being some sort of head piece that is completely unforgettable. You see it once and it’s burned into your mind. After 2 years of building, the Antlers are what was born.

4) How did you get into producing?

A: I started DJ’ing about 10 years ago, and slowly ventured into producing as I wanted to play my own music in DJ set’s. I've been producing for myself and a bunch of different people pretty full on for 8 of those years. I was using logic when most people where Ableton’ers, so it was hard AF to find any info to get started, I started learning off a single dude on YouTube who taught hip hop production through logic called MrMig, wrong genre but hey it got me going.

5) You released 'Requests' not that long ago, how did you come up with the idea for this track?

A: I was going through this giant bunch of old hip hop vocals, and found the sample that can be heard in the breakdown of two girls trying to request a song. I sat on it for awhile cos I thought it would make a super unique idea, to really break up a set, I wanted it to feel like it sampled a lot of other old school hip hop in It, hence the shit load of other little fills and what not, that are all from ip hop records. It always gets a great reaction!

6) What's your mindset when you go into the studio to make a new track?

A: I always ask myself what I would want to hear at a club. I'm all about creating a unique moment, as opposed to just another forgettable groove that fills a set. I try to be creative as possible in each track, and squeeze as much out of an idea as possible.

7) If you could only have 1 collaboration for the rest of your life, who would it be?

A: Ooooh tough question, from a pure “lets make a fucking banger” point of view, I'd probably have to say the dude Tokyo Machine, he makes some crazy bass house!

8) When will you ultimately be satisfied with your career?

A: I remember having a moment when I played my first show as Blvck Karibou with the whole Antler set up and watching it blow peoples minds, being happy at that point and thinking if nothing else, I came and created something I had envisioned for a long time, so from then I was happy. My next goal is to do regular gigs as a touring artist, and also play a festival set. The bar is always rising, as I achieve something I set out to do. There is always another horizon to run towards.

9) What's next for Blvck Karibou?

A: Currently making and releasing a lot of new music, Im setting up the next release now, which I can say here first is called “Elephants” and its wild!!!!!

10) What are your plans for 2020?

A: I just signed with a new booking agent, which should mean a hell of a lot more shows, and a heap of new music!
